To understand alcohol’s impact today, we need to know its history

To understand how alcohol affects our society, we need to know its history. This whiteboard animation, the companion to Alcohol and Suicide: Opening the Conversation, follows alcohol from its arrival with European whalers and traders in the 16th and 17th centuries, through colonial-era restrictions, to the easing of the rules in the 1950s and the rise in consumption and harm that followed. It links that history to today’s challenges, including neglect of children, poor well-being and youth suicide. It also presents the national work towards a long-term, evidence-based alcohol policy. The film ends with a shared question: how do we make sure no one is harmed by alcohol?

Case study

Using animation to put alcohol in Greenland into historical context.

The problem

A story rarely told in context

Alcohol’s role in Greenland is seldom explained as a whole: how it arrived, how rules shaped access to it, and why it still harms families today. Without that context, it is harder to discuss drinking habits openly.

The solution

A clear timeline, told in two languages

We turned the history into a simple chronological whiteboard story in Greenlandic and Danish. It connects historical milestones with findings from the national population survey and invites viewers to reflect on their own drinking habits. It also points to counselling and treatment options.

The result

Knowledge that invites reflection

The animation offers a shared, factual starting point for conversations about alcohol, both in communities and in policy work.
